Il Bordello: Review

Myself and two girlfriends visited this authentic Italian restaurant on Wapping HIgh Street one rainy Saturday night in September. When we arrived for our 9.15pm booking, there was still a queue to get in. Here’s why…

Not long after we were seated around our small table, our food arrived and, oh, how scrumptious it was! To start, we ordered the garlic pizza: a flavoursome, thin and crispy, tomato-based delight in a basket. The moment we’d finished greedily licking our fingers, our main courses landed. With difficulty, I had selected the Orecciette alla Barese: a tomato pasta dish with artichokes (my absolute favourite), aubergine and mincemeat, and I must say, I was extremely happy with my choice.

The food at Il Bordello is of the kind you will force yourself to finish, even when your stretching stomach is screaming out for mercy. It’s just that good. And although I loved my dish, I’m not sure I’d have it again simply because I want to try everything on the extensive menu.

I’ve never had enough room for dessert there, but if the starters and mains are anything to go by, they are most definitely worth a try. The food is flavoursome and reasonably priced, the staff (of which it seems there are hundreds) are friendly and the ambiance busy, yet relaxed. What’s not to love about this delightful, local gem?
